What is the definition of art?

Updated: Sep 27, 2018

The word "art" could refer to anything from literature, music to paintings, sculpture. For centuries, people have never ceased to argue over the true definition of "art".

Today, I would like to talk about art from the perspective of painting.

Some say art is supposed to depict the beauty in its most exact and real form.

Self portrait in a Straw Hat - Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun - 1782

Others say art is all about catching the casual moments.

Combing the Hair - Edgar Degas - 1896

Some say art has to convey thoughts or opinions.

The Raft of the Medusa - Theodore Gericault - 1818

Others say art could just be the improvisational creation of artists.

At the Theatre - Pierre-Auguste Renoir - 1976-1877

Personally, I think whether a piece of works is considered to be a works of art is very much in the eyes of the beholders. The notion of art varies tremendously from person to person depending on each own gout of aesthetics and even personal life experience and family/educational/societal backgrounds.

This variation adds color to the beauty and captivation of art.

There is no fixed definition of art.
