Beethoven's Silence by Ernesto Cortázar

Updated: Jul 23, 2021

I fell in love with this melody right at the first time I happened to hear it. And for many years since, this song has never failed to captivate me by its restless notes.

Ernesto Cortázar is a modern composer. He wrote this song about Beethoven's destined deafness.

The first half of the song is fast paced. The second half is a bit stretched.

Correspondingly, this pace synchronizes with Beethoven's emotional state on realizing the disheartening truth of his permanent deafness. First, he felt extreme confusion and imbalance. Then, he gradually accepted this fact and grieved to the God.

One note about this song is, though it is about Beethoven's unfortunate, I could hardly trace any signs of utter grief or extreme desperation here. On the contrary, I sense the implicit pulse of life, a can't-be-burnt-out talent despite all adversities.

This assumption is reinforced by the high note ending the song.
